Mobile Number Update Mandatory for Driving Licence & Vehicle Owners
18 August, 2025
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) has made a big change, which will affect all registered vehicle owners and driving license holders across the country. Now updating the mobile number and linking it with Aadhaar has been made mandatory to increase safe access and transparency to transport services.
If you have recently received a message from the Transport Department to update the mobile number, then this is not a normal message. This is part of a campaign being run across the country, under which every driving license and vehicle will be linked to a valid and verified mobile number.
Why is this update necessary?
Updating your mobile number will give you real-time information on vehicle registration, challans, renewal reminders and other services.
This will ease communication between citizens and government departments and reduce chances of errors or missed notices.
Most importantly, it is now linked to Aadhaar authentication, ensuring identity and transparency.
Aadhaar linking now mandatory
According to the advice issued by the ministry:
- It will be mandatory to link every vehicle to the mobile number of the owner.
- The information will have to be confirmed with Aadhaar number and OTP based authentication.
- Aadhaar verification will be necessary to use any service related to driving license or vehicle registration.

Alert at state level too
Along with the central government, the state transport departments are also sending notifications to citizens and appealing for updating mobile numbers and Aadhaar verification.
Why is this campaign being run?
Officials have found that many people change their mobile number or address to hide fines or violations. By making Aadhaar verification and mobile number linking mandatory, a transparent and responsible system is now being created.
