Nearly a month after the state government introduced a new digital payment system for online traffic fine payments, only about 19% to 21% of violators in Ahmedabad have used the facility. The system was launched to simplify the process of paying challans through popular mobile payment apps, but concerns about fake links and cyber fraud have made many drivers hesitant.
Although the online challan payment system was designed for convenience and transparency, most violators continue to pay fines manually at designated centres or wait for Lok Adalats to resolve their cases. According to traffic officials, the system is completely safe when used through verified channels.
The new payment method, which supports UPI-based transactions, is part of the broader ‘One Nation One Challan’ initiative introduced nationwide to create a unified digital platform for traffic fine payments. The initiative already allows users to make challan payments through official portals using net banking or debit and credit cards.
However, experts in cybersecurity have warned vehicle owners about the growing number of fake e-challan messages circulating online. These fraudulent messages often contain fake links that mimic government portals and are designed to steal personal or financial information.
Traffic authorities have advised citizens to verify that any payment page includes a CAPTCHA verification before proceeding. The absence of CAPTCHA may indicate a fake website. Additionally, genuine traffic challan messages are sent only via official SMS notifications—never through WhatsApp or social media platforms.
Cyber experts further caution motorists to check the website address carefully before making any payment. Authentic government portals will always end with “.gov.in”. For example, the official challan payment website is https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in, which can be used to safely check and pay pending traffic fines.
